Our Process

How a recovery works, start to finish

We do the research, paperwork, and follow-up. You review, sign, and get paid. Most claims involve four steps:

1

We find the funds

We research California's public unclaimed-property and surplus-funds records and identify money that appears to belong to you or your family.

2

We verify ownership

Using public records, we confirm you are the rightful owner or heir before anything is filed — so your claim is accurate the first time.

3

We prepare the claim

We assemble the official State of California claim forms and a plain-English service agreement stating our fee and your cancellation rights.

4

You get paid

The state pays the claim. Only then is our 10% fee due. If nothing is recovered, you owe nothing — ever.

Transparent Terms

One fee. No surprises. Your rights in writing.

California law strictly regulates unclaimed-property recovery services — and we think that's a good thing. Our terms are the same for every client:

  • Success-only: our fee is due only when your claim is paid. No retainers, no hourly billing, no out-of-pocket costs.
  • You keep 90%: our fee is 10% of the amount recovered, the maximum permitted under California Code of Civil Procedure §1582.
  • Right to self-claim: you may claim your property yourself, directly from the State of California, at no cost, at claimit.ca.gov. We state this in every letter and every agreement.
  • Cancellation rights: every agreement spells out how to cancel, in plain English.
  • No guarantees claimed: we never promise a specific outcome or timeline — anyone who does should worry you.
Our Entire Fee
10%

of the amount recovered — and only if it's recovered.

That's the whole price list. No processing fees, no document fees, no "research" charges. If your claim pays $10,000, you receive $9,000 and our work cost you nothing until the money arrived.

Fee capped by California Code of Civil Procedure §1582. Agreements are only entered where permitted by California's timing rules for recovery agreements.
Did You Receive a Letter From Us?

Smart to check. Here's how to verify us — and your money.

If you received a letter or email from NUPD, it's because public records list you as the potential owner of unclaimed property held by the State of California. Being cautious is exactly the right instinct. Verify everything independently:

Three ways to verify — without trusting us at all:
  1. Search the state's own database. Go to claimit.ca.gov — the California State Controller's official site — and search your name. If we wrote to you, your property should be listed there. (You can also file there yourself, free.)
  2. Call us directly at (530) 906-9278. A real person in our Claims Department (Mon–Fri, 9am–6pm PT) will tell you exactly what we found and answer questions with no obligation.
  3. Check what we don't do. We never ask for payment up front, never ask for your full Social Security number by email, and never pressure you with deadlines. If anyone does those things in our name, hang up and call the number above.

Prefer we stop contacting you? Email claims@nupdivision.com with the subject "Unsubscribe" and we'll remove you from our records immediately.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this a scam? How do I know NUPD is legitimate?
Healthy skepticism is the right response to any letter about money. You never have to take our word for anything: verify your property yourself on the State Controller's official site at claimit.ca.gov, and call us at (530) 906-9278 to speak with our Claims Department. We charge nothing up front, so there is no scenario where you send us money and get nothing — our fee only exists if the State of California pays your claim.
Why would I pay 10% if I can claim it myself for free?
You absolutely can, and we tell every client so — it's your legal right and it costs nothing at claimit.ca.gov. Clients choose us for the same reason people hire a tax preparer: we identify property you may not know exists, confirm ownership documentation, complete the state's forms correctly the first time, and manage follow-up until the check arrives. If you'd rather do it yourself, we genuinely encourage you to.
What kinds of unclaimed property are we talking about?
Common examples include forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll or refund checks, insurance policy proceeds, utility deposits, safe-deposit box contents, stock dividends, and surplus funds from property sales. Businesses lose track of customers; the money is eventually turned over to the State of California, which holds it until the owner claims it.
How long does a claim take?
It varies with the property type, documentation, and the state's processing volume — simple claims may resolve in a few weeks, while complex ones (estates, heirs, multiple owners) can take several months. We can't and won't guarantee a timeline, but we track every claim and follow up with the state so yours doesn't stall.
What will you need from me?
Typically: a signed service agreement, proof of identity, and documents connecting you to the property (for example, proof of a prior address or a relationship to the original owner). We never ask you to email sensitive personal information — documents move through secure channels, and we only collect what the claim actually requires.
Are you affiliated with the government?
No. NUPD is a private asset-recovery firm. We are not a government agency, we are not affiliated with the California State Controller's Office, and we are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice. We help you file your claim with the state — the state itself always pays the claim.
The letter mentions a relative who passed away. What then?
Unclaimed property often belongs to a deceased family member, and rightful heirs can claim it. These claims need extra documentation, and some situations call for guidance from a licensed attorney — if yours does, we'll say so plainly rather than guessing. Call us and we'll walk through what applies to your situation.
